The eighties and nineties have wit nessed a renewed and unpre cedented Interest in men and mas culinity due to the emergence of the alleged contemporary 'crisis of masculinity'. This has been most preva lent in popular culture representations, which appear on the sur face to offer the modern man a whole range of 'new' roles and rela tionships, freeing him from patria chal entrapment and the dicates and demands of the traditional male sex role. The New Man Is Imaged as soft, sensitive, expressive and un afraid to show his emotions. New erotosized Images have made their appearance, and men are Imaged as sex objects in a way that only women were represented In the past. However, the question arises as to what these Images mean, and whether or not they represent any change In the patriarchal status quo In Western societies. In this article an attempt is made to deconstruct some of the new notions of masculinity in the light of the contempo rary 'crisis of masculinity', and the new popular culture representations of men In the mass media.

In this paper the author attempts to extrapolate Bouwer's argument (Bouwer:1990) of cabanet as alternative discourse even further, and seeks to construct an exploratory argument that a measure of cabaret texts may be sufficiently journalistic In style and structure to be con sidered so-called New Journalism. The author seeks a common ground between cabaret and New Journalism by defining and tracing the his torical development of both phe nomena. Signs of Intertextuality are Identified and certain stylistic and structural elements of New Journal Ism are then operationalised In an exploratory and cursory Intertextual reading of selected South African cabaret texts. The paper does not postulate a rigid theoretical framework, but alms to stimulate further discourse and re search on the proposed Intertextual reading between cabaret and New Journalism.

There can be no doubt that communication forms a golden thread throughout all other management functions and contexts in the modern organisation. Although this has, In fact, been the case for many de cades, it is only during the last two decades that a growing awareness of this has developed in most or ganisations. In this context, It seems fair to ask what is being done in the field of communication training from a management training perspective. This paper discusses the develop ment and importance of communica tion as a management function, and presents an overview of traditional approaches to and recent develop ments in management or business communication training, as well as four sets of empirical data on man- po agement communication training practices. Finally, a framework is proposed for the training of man agement communication In the economic and sciences curriculum. management

A central leque ini Intercultural interaction is the phenomenon of per ception. Perception Influences the understanding and Interpretation of events. In order to succeed in Inter cultural Interaction it is necessary to develop an understanding and ap preciation of perceptual differences. The purpose of this study was to examine the perceptions that a sec tion of white UOFS students have of the general black population. To reach this objective, a literature study was undertaken in order to es tablish a clear understanding of per ception and the related concepts. Such concepts included race, cul ture, attitude, prejudice and stereo type. The study concentrated on the Interrelations between these con cepts as well as on the effects of these concepts on the formation of an Individual's perceptions. Through statistical analysis the following considerations were also ad dressed: Whether or not any correlations exist between the perceptions of the respondents. Whether male and female re spondents differ with regard to their political orientations. Whether there are any differences and/or similarities in the perceptions of male and female respondents. • The Identification of specific fac tors in order to determine their contribution toward specific perceptions

Based on extensive survey research work, this paper sets out to explore some comparative issues on the Impact of the media on attitudes to wards political violence in the Natal Midlands. Central to the discussion Is an attempt to apply and develop contemporary theories of the role of space, community and domestic ar rangements as a basis for exploring the differential Influence/impact of media representations of political violence. While an empirical approach, on its own, has many limitations in ex plaining how media representations shape attitudes, this paper sets out to show that the media "consump tlon" of Whites and Indians' poses a number of important questions for researchers of medla effects
